Create a ‘Calming Folder’ to Help Your Child Cope with Back-to-School Emotions

School is back in full swing and I am so excited for my children to begin the 2019-2020 year. But with a new school year comes new emotions and feelings before and after school. So, this year I started a new tradition with them. I am making them each a "calming folder.”

I started compiling items for the folder by first having each of them fill out a questionnaire. This questionnaire asked them what they hope to accomplish this year and other questions to get them thinking ahead. It’s important to let them answer it on their own so it can be used as a reinforcer in the future.

Along with the questionnaire I also included crossword puzzles, word searches, coloring pages and jokes. You can add other activity pages that your child may enjoy. This folder will need to be at their homework station and can be used when your child has had a rough day, needs reassurance, or needs to relax before homework time or bedtime. Of course, hugs, kisses and encouraging words also help.

The purpose of this folder is to remind your children that even though there may be tough days, you can take a breather and keep working toward your initial goals.

It is important to replenish the folder with activities so there is always something they can use to relax. I am also having each member of our close family and friends write each child an encouraging letter to include in the folder.
