Indoor Activities for When It’s Too Cold to Play Outside

When the weather turns cold, children are trapped inside with no hope for fun or entertainment. At least that’s what they think. For my kids, being stuck in the house for long stretches of time is like torture. While I’m grateful they typically choose outdoor play over screen time, it can be a headache trying to keep them busy when the weather is inclement.

So, I’ve come up with a list of indoor activities that require little set up time and minimal damage to the furniture.

Tape Activities

If you have a roll of painter’s tape or masking tape hanging out in your junk drawer, then it’s your lucky day. Stretch out pieces of tape on the floor to create roads for Hot Wheels or lanes for balls. You can also use the tape to create shapes or letters if you want to add an educational element to their play.

Balloon Games

I used to think these birthday decorations were a little pointless (I mean, they deflate within hours), but I now see their value. A balloon can be used to play balloon volleyball over two chairs and a blanket in the living room, or it can be used in a game of balloon paddle ball with a set of fly swatters.

Gross Motor Bingo

When you’ve exhausted the balloons and the tape, try printing out this free Gross Motor Bingo card (pdf) from The Inspired Treehouse. It will not only give your children the chance to expend some of that pent-up energy, but it will also give them the chance to practice motor skills that will help them later in life.

Paper Plate Ice Skating

My children love putting on fuzzy socks and “skating” through the kitchen. But this isn’t always convenient or safe. Paper plate ice skating is much easier and safer and can be done on the carpet in the living room. A win-win for mom and kids! Just hand your children a set of paper plates for their feet and let them go to town. You can even have them choreograph an ice “show” if you’re feeling brave.
