Creating Work/Life Boundaries: Keeping Work from Becoming Your Lifestyle

Working from home can be both a blessing and a curse.  You are able to hang out in your pajamas while handling most work duties on the phone or email, but how do you focus on your reports and sales calls when there is a pile of laundry sitting nearby silently nagging to be folded?

Here are some ideas to keep work as your professional life and personal time personal:

Dedicate a space in your home for work and do not work anywhere else.  This space should be just for working which means that a corner in the bedroom or an end of the dining room table simply won’t cut it.  The IRS wants to see a dedicated space for your home office and so does your family.

Take a shower, seriously.  As tempting as it may be to stay in your pajamas or workout clothes all day, taking a shower and putting on what I call “daytime clothes” will make you feel more professional in your home work space.  Trust me, you will be more efficient when you don’t feel like a slob.

Set up regular working hours and stick to them.  The benefit of working from home is that you often have the luxury of setting your own hours.  But watching television, taking naps, or even folding those clothes will eat into your productivity as well as your personal time by having to make up for the lost time “after hours.” Add your office hours to your voice mail to prevent calls from coming in at all hours.

Your personal time is just as important as your office time but for different reasons.  Respect them both by keeping them clearly defined.
