Back to School Breakfasts

Yes! Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It’s how we get our motors started after sleeping. However, a healthy breakfast can be a challenge for busy families. I took a recent poll of some friends to see what their kids like to eat for breakfast and combined those ideas with some other options. These options are not what I would consider "complete" breakfasts. However, they are quick and healthy options for on-the-go families. You can combine most of these with fresh fruit and/or a glass of skim milk for some protein. Also, use whole grain bread.

Cold Cereals
Look for whole grain
Read labels for amount of sugar
Check for a 4-1 ratio of total grams of carbohydrate to total grams of sugar.

Granola Bars
Read labels for amount of sugar

Example: Kashi ® TLC™ chewy granola bars.

Smoothies
Use low-fat yogurt
Mix bananas and skim milk
Add a touch of vanilla or Splenda ®

Other Quick Options
Peanut butter and banana on toast
Peanut butter and low-sugar jelly

Whole grain waffles with lowfat yogurt.
(My kids actually like these dry!)
