Where does the Time Go?

Do you know where your time goes?  Whether at work or at home we lose track of our time from sneaky little distractions.  We also lose time to larger, more obvious distractions with the biggest being television.

According to the A.C. Nielson Company, the average American watches more than four hours of television each day.  That equates to twenty-eight hours per week or two-months of non-stop television in a year.  At that rate, a 65 year old individual will have spent nine years of his or her life in front of the tv.

Television serves a critical role in today's society and I am by no means advocating its removal from your home.  The trick is to better manage the time spent glued to the screen.  The best way to do this is by using TiVo or a DVR.  You can schedule your tv time into your life rather than your life around the tv.  Being able to fast forward through commercials is a bonus!

32% of our shows are relegated to commercials.  So by recording a show and forwarding through the commercials, you can save more than twenty minutes per hour-long show.

Other, equally important, time vacuums include the internet, social networking sites, and driving.  Keeping a time journal is a great way to get a better handle on how you spend your time.  Simply record what you do each day and for how long.  At the end of two weeks you will have a very clear picture.  You will then be able to consolidate, eliminate, and delegate items that prevent you from actually enjoying your life.
