Your Resource For Local Family Fun

It’s Party Time!

During the holidays it’s party after party.  With kids, it’s the school party, the church party, the soccer party, the dance party, etc.  As adults, holiday parties can add on the pounds really quickly if we aren’t careful.  Have you thought about your kids?  Even if they can “afford” a few pounds, are they eating tons of junk?  My philosophy is “do so in moderation.”  However, during the holidays, we often go overboard. Here are some suggestions for healthy, but fun snacks for holiday parties.

  • Cheese and crackers – Use lower fat cheese and whole grain or multi grain crackers
  • Cut a string cheese stick into several smaller pieces.  The kids will love to pull it apart and make small strings of cheese
  • Cupcakes anyone?  Add a cup or so of oats or bran to the mix for added fiber.  (Just make sure you have enough liquid in the recipe)
  • Fresh sliced fruit and use vanilla yogurt as a dip
  • Finger sandwiches.  Kids love little sandwiches and those that are shaped with a cookie cutter.  Use lean turkey, etc.
  • Cereal mix.  Use lower sugar cereals and mix with pretzels, goldfish, etc.
  • How about a red and green tray?  Kiwi, green grapes, green apples, strawberries, cherries, red apples.
  • Mini muffins. Bake whole grain muffins in small tins.  Add red or green food coloring to the mix.
  • For drinks, avoid sugary beverages and try small bottles of water or flavored waters.
