Top 10 Stress Management Techniques

slow down, relax, take it easy, keep calm and other motivational If you and I were to be having coffee and I asked you give me a quick list of the stressors in your life, would you know?  Sure, if you are grieving, moving, or undergoing extensive home renovations, the answer would be simple but everyday life can be terribly taxing in it's own right and keep us on an ongoing unhealthy cortisol ‘high'.

Santa Clara University has been generous enough to provide anyone who cares to look the "Top Ten Stress Management Techniques".  To save you a few minutes, I will tell you, you can thank me later.

  1. Organize yourself – this is really number one and not just me renumbering them.   This allows you to take better control of your time and energy to better control – and even identify – your stress.

  2. Control your environment by controlling what is surrounding you.  This is scientific talk for getting the negative people out of your life.  Drama is always stressful, send it packing.

  3. Love yourself by giving yourself positive feedback.  We are so quick to beat ourselves up, and honestly we are unique individuals doing the best we can right now. You deserve a break.

  4. Reward yourself by planning leisure activities in your life.  Know where to find your joy and go there, often.

  5. Exercise your body since your health and productivity depend upon your body's ability to bring oxygen and food to it's cells.  Those of you who do not exercise regularly, try it and keep trying.  Just because your spouse enjoys running doesn't mean it will work for you.  I exercise in a pool but I don't ‘swim'.  Think outside your box and you will be amazed at the difference in your life.

  6. Relax by taking your mind off your stress and concentrating on breathing and positive thoughts.  Dreaming counts, along with meditation, progressive relaxation, exercise, listening to music, and spending time with people that add value to our lives.  Yoga is a double whammy, exercise and relaxation.

  7. Rest yourself as regularly as possible.  Sleep deprivation can actually look like ADD and can cause far-reaching havoc in our lives.  Eight hours of sleep and a ten-minute break for every hour of focus and brain work.

  8. Be aware of yourself.  Be aware of distress signals like insomnia, headaches, anxiety, upset stomach, lack of concentration, etc.  These can also be signs of potentially more serious conditions.  You deserve better, don't just ‘live with it'.

  9. Feed yourself rather than poison your body.  Eat a balanced diet, avoid high fat/sugar/salt foods, keep your body drug free.

  10. Enjoy yourself.  It has been shown that happier people live longer, have fewer physical problems, and are more productive.  Look for the humor in life when things don't make sense.

The bottom line is you are very special and deserve only the best treatment of yourself.
