Sweet and Simple Valentine’s Crafts for Kids

You've finally taken down your Christmas tree, put away the stuffed animal holiday decorations your children have suddenly become attached to, and now begins the process of preparing for the next holiday. Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and you will soon be eating too many sweets at classroom parties, searching store shelves for a gift for your spouse, and pretending that you'll only eat one piece of candy a day from your box of chocolates.

So, embrace the heart-filled holiday and get out the craft supplies and the cooking utensils, and have some Valentine's-themed fun with your kids.

Make something sweet
Although your child will no doubt be inundated with treats at school parties and other gatherings, it doesn't mean you can't make a special treat just for them. The moms from 5minutesformom.com used pretzels and candy melts to create some beautiful and yummy snacks for their kids. They say even kids as young as three can help dip the pretzels and cover the melted candy with sprinkles and colored sugar.

Feed the birds
Why not give a little love to the creatures outside, while giving your little ones something to do on those cold winter mornings? These adorable heart-shaped bird feeders from sweetandsimpleliving.com will get your kids using their eye-hand coordination and using up the cereal they won't eat.

Do an experiment
If your kids aren't into eating those little conversation hearts, then try using them to do a little Valentine's-themed science experiment. All you need are some household products like vinegar, water, rubbing alcohol and a can of soda. You already have the beginnings of a cool experiment your kids will want to see again and again.

Catch the sun
If your kids love to paint, then these heart-shaped sun catchers could be the perfect Valentine's Day craft for them. All you need is watercolors, some coffee filters and an eyedropper. Once your children have "painted" their craft, let it dry and watch the unique patterns come alive. Then you can hang them on a window and watch the sunlight shine through.

Make a silly friend
Valentine's Day is all about love and friendship. So, why not let your kids create a silly friend to help decorate your home and make them laugh. This heart-themed companion is made of a red Solo cup and some construction paper. Not only is he cute to look at it, but he makes a great Valentine's Day gift for a parent or grandparent.

Cuddle up with your creations
If your older kids are wanting more of a challenge when it comes to Valentine's crafting, then why not help them create "X" and "O" pillows that will not only be fun to make, but will add to the holiday décor. All you need is some fleece and a few sewing materials, and you've got a great rainy/snowy day project that will get the kids away from their electronics and into the Valentine's Day spirit.
