Spotlight on McLane Stadium

As the summer sun beats down on Baylor University’s campus, a group of active children walk noisily toward the green turf of McLane Stadium. As they realize the enormity of the facility and the reverence of where their standing, their eyes light up and they are filled with excitement.

This is the reaction Jordin Westbrook, Operations & Events Manager for the stadium, likes to see when children walk onto the field for the first time.

“It’s definitely a unique atmosphere, especially for kids who are Baylor fans,” she said. “It’s not something you see every day.”

Children can have the chance to feel like their favorite Baylor Bears when they attend the stadium’s annual summer camp.

“This is our second year doing it,” Westbrook said. “We got a lot of great reviews from parents last year.”

The week-long camp, that begins June 12, includes themed days that the operations and events manager said are structured to give campers a chance to get their bodies moving, as well as their minds.

These themes include everything from a get-to-know-the-stadium day where campers are sent on a facility-wide scavenger hunt, to a sports day where they can compete in organized games, to a water day complete with inflatable water slides.

The stadium is open for camp three weeks out of the summer, June 12 – 16, July 11 – 17, and August 7 – 11. The camp is $150 and lasts from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. Parents can opt to bring their child at 8 a.m. if they pay the $25 per week extended care fee.

Only 48 kids are accepted for each week of camp, so parents are encouraged to secure their child’s spot as soon as possible.

Along with opportunities to learn and play at McLane Stadium, the facility is also available for birthday parties.

“[Parents] can rent the playing field, the Berm Area or Touchdown Alley,” Westbrook said. “It is an hourly fee, and we provide the space and the staff to monitor the event.”

Tables, chairs and catering services can also be added to the price of the rental.

“There’s really nothing compared to letting the kids play on the field,” she said. “It’s not something you’re going to get having a party at your house.”
