LEGO Organization Made Easy

Any who has children knows the pain of stepping on a LEGO brick with bare feet. It is a rite of passage; proof positive that you are midway between diapers and drivers. I am often asked how to organize these pain-causing toys and get them off the floor. The real answer is that there is no right answer that will work for everyone.

But here are a couple of options to try.

Compartmentalize

Using plastic storage drawers, your budding architect can sort his or her bricks in whatever way makes the most sense to them (not you): by color, shape, or project.  Drawer systems are relatively inexpensive, and your kiddo can take out entire drawers to carry to the workspace. Don’t forget to label!

Out of sight

Under the bed storage bins are great for the family that plays with LEGOs in shared spaces. These can be tucked under many furniture pieces in addition to beds; sofas, coffee tables, etc.

The shallow bins make it easier to find that special piece and can stack neatly on top of one another.

In plain sight

For families with a designated playroom, covering a portion of the room’s walls with LEGO base plates is a genius way of getting them off the floor. Simply stick the bricks on the wall. For the pieces not on the wall, a large bin on the floor in front will do the trick.

Whatever system you use, keeping it simple for your children is the most important aspect.
