Halloween Candy Alternatives

By Tiffany Glenn, M.S., R.D.,L.D. Registered Dietitian

Halloween is all about the candy, right?  I’ll have to admit it’s a big part of what makes Halloween fun to kids, but do they really need that much? How much of that candy do you really throw away when it’s all said and done?  Each year Americans are spending $950 a year on candy.  It’s no wonder that 1:6 kids/teens are overweight or obese.   Why not try something fun and different?  Here are a few suggestions:

  • Stickers
  • Pencils
  • Mini play doh (you can often find this on sale throughout the year)
  • Mini notebooks
  • Erasers
  • Stick on tattoos
  • Sugar free gum
  • Crayons
  • Teddy Graham packages
  • Goldfish packages
  • Glow sticks
  • Mini pretzel bags
  • Plastic rings
  • Small bottle of bubbles
  • Bouncy balls
  • Tiny Decks of Cards
  • Prepackaged mini popcorn bags
  • Seed packets for flowers or veggies
  • Slime

Maybe these ideas will be a treat that the kids will love this year!
