Getting Started When You Have Zero Motivation

There are times we all feel like getting exactly nothing done. Sometimes it is necessary. I love a lazy Sunday as much as the next person.  Other times, however, the inclination to chill is not well-timed. What can we do when we need to be motivated, but can’t seem to get going? First, acknowledge that you are not alone the struggle is real. Next, understand that it is just a feeling and not a fact.

Here’s how:

First, give yourself permission to do a bad job. “Today, I give myself permission to make a mess of painting the kitchen.”

The same goes for organizing and cleaning. Tell yourself it’s OK if your first attempt doesn’t generate the ideal result. Just get started. You can edit or make improvements later.

Next, (and this is a big one) disconnect from the internet, completely. No Facebook, email, Pinterest, Twitter, or online games. There isn’t a bigger time waster on the planet. Avoid it and you’ll be more productive and happier with your output.

Of course, there is far more to it than getting started and staying off social media. Getting in the right mindset is critical. While that sounds daunting, there are a couple of things you can do to get your mind in the right place. These include purchasing or assembling necessary tools, reading about what you need to do, or simply putting it on your calendar. Bottom line: it doesn’t have to be complicated.

These are your basic steps, regardless of the project:

1.    Start with something too easy to avoid.

2.    Get physically moving.

3.    Keep it consistent.

We procrastinate in the face of feeling overwhelmed. We don’t know where to begin. I combat this by writing down the three tasks I must complete during the following day. That little note sits on my keyboard and answers the question, “Where do I start?”

Good luck with your new projects in 2019. Here’s hoping you accomplish all you set out to do and more.
