Be The Hero…Estate Preparation

There are only two certains in this world…our birth and our death.  Births bring great joy while the passing of a loved one brings great sadness.  The one very important thing that you can do for your loved ones is to make the "at death" process as easy as possible for them.

A Will is very important, of course, yet there are a number of things that you can have prepared for your family in advance.  Create an At Death file for your loved ones to include the following items:

  • Copies of birth certificates for the decedent and any minor children

  • Marriage certificates and/or divorce decrees

  • Social Security number

  • Copies of Military discharge papers

  • Union or Professional Membership Information

  • Copies of Wills and Trust documents

  • List of business contacts: CPA, Financial Advisor, Attorney, Employer

  • List of accounts and assets (checking, savings, credit cards, investment and retirement accounts, loan accounts)

  • Insurance policies (health, life, home, auto, disability)

  • Copies of stock or bond certificates

  • Copies of dividend information

  • Real estate documentation

  • List of automobiles

  • List of personal assets (jewelry, art, coins, etc.)

  • Utility accounts (electricity, phone, water, internet)

  • Periodical subscriptions

  • Safe Deposit Box information

This information should be in a safe place with the executor of your estate made aware of the location.  Another good idea is to provide your family with the contact information of a Professional Organizer that works with Estates.  He or she could be an invaluable asset in the sorting and distribution process as well as an unemotional party to assist in the completion of forms and negotiations with estate sale companies.

The more organized you are now; the easier the difficult time will be on those who love you.

Have a NEAT day!
